Ever packed only what you need to ride, then worried about wet clothes on the way home? The bucket picture helps you think of both what you need on the water and what you'll use off it.

01. Separate what you wear from what you pack

A flotation device and a leash aren't done just because they're in the bucket. Wear your flotation device properly, and use a leash type that suits the water you're on.

Find the water bottle, sunscreen, a bright top and a hat in the picture too. It helps to prepare for the heat, the wind and the water temperature as well.

02. Pack what you'll use out of the water, too

A warm top, dry spare clothes and a towel are for when you get back. Keeping a place for wet gear separate from a place for dry clothes makes packing up easier.

The screwdriver and insulating tape are the original's examples for preparing gear. Bring only the tools your product needs, and don't read it as saying it's fine to make hasty improvised repairs at the water's edge.

03. Check the essentials that aren't in the picture

This bucket picture isn't a complete checklist for every activity. The RNLI advises carrying a way to call for help, kept waterproof, on your body and within reach.

The trash grabber is an optional tool to use when conditions allow. First make sure you're ready to ride and get back safely, and tell someone your route and when you'll be back.
